ADUs or accessory dwelling units have become very popular in San Diego, and I think I know why. There’s so many benefits to building a detached ADU on your lot. Let’s talk about a couple of them.
So first off, if you build a detached ADU, this is going to give you some flexibility on your lot. And flexibility almost always comes with value.
So for example, a detached ADU can be rented out and you can make rental income from the tenant who lives there. You could move into that ADU and rent your primary dwelling unit, which may be larger for more money every month for a tenant that’s going to live there.
You could also use that detached ADU as a home office and in this remote work era, that might not be a bad idea. Especially if you need some more privacy.
If you have college kids, instead of sending them to live on campus, you can have them live in the detached accessory dwelling unit, and that may another cost save opportunity.
And just in general, you can use that detached accessory dwelling unit for anything you want - from a pool house to a home studio, to a home office; there’s lots and lots of flexibility in a detached ADU.
So I think there’s quite a bit of benefits and I think when you explore them from that perspective, they become very obvious.
